Research Topic: Obesity in Children





The problem addressed in this article is the causes of childhood obesity. The authors approach to responding to the problem is suggesting different approaches to treatment and prevention. The finding is that many nations has witnessed an epidemic of adult and child obesity.

Future steps to take in getting obesity under control are:

1.  Keep a three-day dietary record and list any high-fat foods eaten.
2. Consider your own and your family's participation in physical activity and compare this to the guideline of at least one hour per day spent in moderate activity.
3. Diet or Physical Activity?
4. Discover what options there are in the locality of your workplace for children to participate in physical activity and clubs.


Reading this article shaped my thinking because now it makes me want to lose weight, even though I'm not obese I still want to be healthy and in good shape. So it has persuaded me to do something about my well-being.


QUESTIONS:

-what types of health problems can adults and children gain from being obese?
-why is it easier to eat fatty food rather than healthy foods?
-is obesity hereditary?

Interesting blog posts

My favorite blog site is twopedsinapod, I went on that site to see if I could find a post that interests me and I found a post titled Tough to swallow: hints on giving your child medicine. This post suggests ways to give medicine to your children. Whether he/she hates medicine or just refuses to take it, this post can assure there is a way to have your child feeling better in no time. I think this post interests me because sometimes parents don't really know who to administer medicine effectively to their children. Me, myself I'm only 18 and sometimes I don't even know how to give myself the correct form/dosage of medicine or may not even want to take the medicine to be able to feel better.

-what if no one ever discussed this topic?
-will parents actually read into this bog post?
-what do you do when you've taken the advice from this post and it doesn't work?


If no one ever researched this, everyone would just take the one perspective and run with it. They wouldn't know about other ways of giving medicine.

52 Years a Slave

In August of 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter responding to a public newspaper article written by a group of clergymen from Birmingham Jail. The article wasn't exactly written to Dr. King, more like what he stood for. The clergymen stated that the sit-ins, marches, and so forth were "unwise & untimely". I am supposed to be stating how some of the specifics Dr. King talked about in his letter have changed. I honestly don't think ANYTHING has changed, African Americans are still experiencing hatred from policeman and/or whites.


2012, Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in Florida because he looked "suspect"
2013, Kimani Gray was killed by WHITE police officer for no reason
2014, Michael Brown was killed by WHITE police officer in Missouri even after surrendering

Not only have these young black men been killed by whites, but so many more that go unnoticed. As African Americans watch the news everyday, we see our young black men being killed off one by one by white police officers or whites without any consequences. " Is it genocide? Our young black men have no place in this world, although times are not exactly the same as from 1963 they still experience hard times. If anything has changed, it's the fact that blacks are now "supposed" to be equal to whites, and that's what Martin Luther King died for.

The first blog has a very unique name "Two Peds in a Pod", the name is what caught my attention first. As I scroll through the blog, the colors are interesting and also the art of the two pediatricians that's off to the side. I like the fact that the most recent blog has to do with what's going on in our world currently. The fact that it's winter and our children are getting sick, the first post states the best cold medications for children. Other posts are ones like eating better and healthier, asthma medications for children, hints on giving your child tough to swallow medicine and etc.


The second blog interested me because the author of this blog is a pediatrician of course, but also a mom. This blog is different from the first one because this blog is more lengthy in articles, very minimal pictures. The fact that she is a mom, helps her articles be more from the heart because she knows what kids need and how to treat them not only because all she works wit is children but she has some of her own. Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson says her blog caters to one principle: parents just want to do what's right.


The last blog is more of a hospital website with a blog built into it. This blog is straight to the point.  talks about things that are relevant in a hospital, like the flu, becoming parents, etc. It tells stories about children and the different procedures they've went through and how they are living now. This blog interests me because it is very inspirational and informal. Some articles in this blog state how surgeries saved someone's life. If that's not inspirational then I don't know what is!

Introduction

Hi, my name is Destini and I'm a college freshman at Eastern Michigan University. A nursing major and a future pediatrician. I'm writing to inform but also to learn. I absolutely don't know everything about Pediatrics, but that's exactly what this blog is for. I can write about a topic and other Pediatricians or nurses ma comment with their ideas and beliefs.



My English professor showed our class a TedX talk in which Chimamanda Adichie talks about the danger of the single story. The single story is how someone can believe something based on what they hear or what they think they know. She supports this argument with the fact that she once believed in a single story, in which she read British and American books and the only type of people that were in those books were "foreign" people. Things changed once she discovered African books, she realized African American people could exist in Literature. The African books saved her from the single story of what books were. Long story short, when you hear something about someone you automatically think it's all true, without knowing the real story. The danger of that is when you have a one minded thought about someone, sometimes that doesn't change.

Now, I must confess that I have a single story about writing that I'm sure is not complete. When I was in middle school and my first 2 years of high school, writing was TERRIBLE! I hated it. I thought that when writing it always had to be on a certain topic and it had to be timed, 30 minutes to be exact. I believed that's what writing was all about until my first semester English teacher taught me otherwise. She made my writing experience in her class the time of my life. Our writing assignments were about fun things, we composed mixtapes and wrote about each song and why one came after the other and why that particular song was put on the mixtape. It was really fun, now I know that I can write about what or how I feel and it's never timed. This blog is helping to fight against this single story because I can write about what interests me and I can learn new things and I can do it at my own pace.
